Onychomycosis, or nail fungi, has been around for quite some time. Because of the prevalence of public swimming pools, public restrooms, and public saunas, nail fungal infection is common among people nowadays. Men, who are more prone to sweating profusely and developing diseases such as diabetes, are more prone than women when it comes to fungi development. Athletes in particular are at a great risk of developing nail fungi because of several reasons. The first has to do with the athlete’s rigorous physical exertion, which is naturally accompanied by profuse sweating. The second reason is based on the athlete’s attire, which usually consists of tight-fitting clothing and tight-fitting shoes. Third, athletes are more exposed to injury than other people.

Any injury may hasten or spread fungal, viral, or bacterial infection. The most ideal environment for the development of fungi is a moisture-rich, dark place. Athletes are yummy targets for nail fungi because of the reasons stated above. Even women, who sweat considerably less than men, can also be affected with nail fungi. Also, nail fungi growth isn’t confined to toe nails alone- they can also spread to finger nails, as well as other parts of the body.

Luckily, a great number of drugs are able to get rid of fungal infections. The most popular among these are orally ingested drugs. However, these drugs usually come with a side-effect. Before resorting to any anti-fungal treatment, it is highly important for one to first know the side effects of the drug he or she is taking, as well as the recommended dosage and length of application.
